While everyone was tuned in to the Kevin McCarthy/GOP back and forth last week, we had a choppy start in the markets to kick off 2023. Key volatility drivers included the Non-Farm Payroll release (better than expected) and the Unemployment Rate falling to 3.5%. Despite the addition of jobs in December, the price action responded more to the Average Hourly Earnings of 0.3% (a drop from the previous month). Investors can only hope that the Fed will slow interest-rate hikes in February after witnessing a contracting service sector plus lower wage growth.

Other Key highlights from last week:

  • Amazon to layoff over 18K employees

  • Sivergate stock is down 40% following write-off and job cuts

  • Litecoin ($LTC) was the 2nd most transacted cryptocurrency

  • NFT market pumped to the upside - Yuga assets ranked on top

The week ahead is filled with medium-and high-impact news for the US markets. On Tuesday (01/10/2023), Fed Chair Jerome Powell speaks on Central Bank Independence at the Sveriges Riksbank International Symposium, Stockholm, Sweden. Investors will also be watching the Consumer Price Index (CPI) release on Thursday (01/12/2023).

Will any of these economic indicators show signs of relief for consumers and companies? Will the assumptions of a dovish Fed hold?

For my Forex peeps: Watch out for medium-to-high impact news that may affect any of the CHF, AUD, EUR, GBP, and/or CAD pairs.
